We have lost count of how many teachers have come to us after failing ISLPR Writing elsewhere — often more than once. Most of them pass with us. Here is why.
If you are reading this after failing ISLPR Writing — possibly for the second or third time — you are not alone, and you are not bad at English. In seven years of specialising in ISLPR coaching, one of the most common stories we hear is not "I have never prepared for this test." It is "I already did a course somewhere else, and I still didn't reach Band 4."
We are IELTS Manzil's ISLPR writing specialists, and hundreds of the teachers we have coached to Band 4 in Writing came to us after a failed attempt — some after preparing with another coach, a general IELTS tutor, or a course that treated ISLPR like a generic English class. Here is what we have learned from watching that pattern repeat, and what we do differently.
We are not going to tell you that your last coach did nothing right. But there are specific, recurring reasons we see teachers stall at Band 3 or 3+ even after weeks of preparation elsewhere.
Many coaches who teach ISLPR also teach IELTS, PTE, or general English. ISLPR Writing has its own register, its own task types, and its own examiner expectations — a strategy borrowed from IELTS writing often does not transfer, and can actively work against you.
Corrected grammar on one essay tells you what was wrong once. It does not tell you the pattern in your errors that will show up again in the exam room under different task wording. Without that, teachers keep repeating the same mistake in a new sentence.
A fixed syllabus taught the same way to every student misses the fact that a primary teacher's writing gaps are rarely the same as a secondary science teacher's. Preparation that does not start with assessing your specific profile is preparation aimed at an average student, not at you.
Writing more practice essays does not help if nobody is telling you, task by task, whether that particular piece would actually clear Band 4 with a real examiner — and exactly why or why not.

We would rather tell a teacher they need three more weeks than let them book a test date they are likely to fail again. A second or third failed attempt costs more than money — it costs confidence and time against a deadline.

Teachers who fail ISLPR Writing a second time often start to doubt whether they can reach Band 4 at all. In our experience, that is almost never the real problem. The far more common explanation is that the same approach was repeated without identifying what specifically needed to change. A different diagnosis usually changes the outcome — we have seen this across teachers from India, the Philippines, China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Nigeria and many other countries, at every stage from first-time candidates to teachers on their third resit.
