Registration requirements

Requirements by State and Territory

The information below is a general guide. Always check directly with your state registration board for the most current requirements.

Interstate registration transfer: Teachers who have obtained registration in one Australian state using ISLPR may be eligible to transfer their registration to other states. This means ISLPR can be an indirect pathway to teacher registration across all Australian states and territories. Contact the registration board in your target state for transfer eligibility.

Victoria

Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)

VIT requires internationally trained teachers to demonstrate English proficiency. ISLPR Band 4 in all four skills is accepted. Teachers must apply for registration before beginning employment in Victorian schools.

New South Wales

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)

NESA requires ISLPR Band 4 in all four skills for internationally trained teachers seeking accreditation. Accreditation is required before teaching in any NSW school.

Queensland

Queensland College of Teachers (QCT)

QCT requires evidence of English language proficiency for internationally trained teachers. ISLPR Band 4 is an accepted pathway. Registration is required before teaching in Queensland.

Western Australia

Teacher Registration Board of WA (TRBWA)

TRBWA accepts IELTS for teacher registration. Teachers who have obtained registration in another Australian state using ISLPR may be eligible to transfer their registration to Western Australia. Contact TRBWA directly for transfer eligibility and current requirements.

South Australia

Teachers Registration Board of SA (TRBSA)

TRBSA requires English proficiency evidence from internationally trained teachers. ISLPR Band 4 is accepted. Registration must be completed before teaching in South Australian schools.

Tasmania

Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania (TRBT)

ISLPR may be accepted through interstate registration transfer. Teachers registered in another Australian state using ISLPR may be eligible to transfer their registration to Tasmania. Check directly with TRBT for current requirements and transfer eligibility.

Northern Territory

Teacher Registration Board of the NT (TRBNT)

TRBNT requires English proficiency for internationally trained teachers. ISLPR Band 4 is an accepted pathway. Contact TRBNT for the most current requirements.

Australian Capital Territory

ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI)

TQI requires internationally trained teachers to demonstrate English language proficiency as part of the registration process. ISLPR is an accepted test.
